September 19, 2007|By HEATHER KEELS

An attempt to parallel park went awry Tuesday when a van's brakes failed, sending it rolling backward into a parked vehicle, through several yards and into the side of a house on Hamilton Boulevard, the van's driver told Hagerstown City Police.

Angela Luster, 44, of 807 Hamilton Blvd., was treated for injuries at Washington County Hospital, police said.

Luster told police she was attempting to parallel park the 1994 Plymouth van in the 800 block of Hamilton Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. when the brakes failed. The vehicle traveled in reverse into the 900 block, struck a parked vehicle and continued in reverse through several yards before striking the front porch of a house at 916-918 Hamilton Blvd., police said.

The vehicle overturned when it struck an apartment building at 920 Hamilton Blvd., police said.

The porch of the house at 916-918 Hamilton Blvd. was severely damaged, but the structure was not damaged, police said.
