SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Leopards won their first volleyball match of the season Monday night, sweeping the Frederick Cadets, 25-15, 25-17, 25-11.

The Leopards (1-2) trailed 12-11 in the second game when Valerie Smith reeled off nine consecutive service points to give the Leopards the lead for good at 20-12.

"It's all focus and concentration," Smith said. "I just wanted to keep my serve consistent. Once we get a lead, it gets us more excited to keep pushing harder."

Smith finished with 26 assists and 11 service points.

Smithsburg coach Rachel Bachtell said that the Leopards' passing helped to get the hitting going.

"Tonight, the girls did a good job of getting the ball to Valerie," Bachtell said. "Valerie was then able to distribute the ball to the hitters."

Colleen Black had 13 kills, Nikki Seifert had 10 kills, Taylor Belella had 14 service points and Kaitlyn Yoder added nine service points for Smithsburg.

"I think that after our first two losses of the season, we knew that we had to go back to the fundamentals," Bachtell added. "We did the little things right tonight. We did a nice job of serve receive and serving, which was consistent. We played good defense."

Carly Jones had seven kills and four blocks for the Cadets (0-4).

JV: Smithsburg, 25-12, 25-17.
