BOONSBORO - One person was killed and seven others were injured in a three-car accident Sunday afternoon on U.S. 40 near Mount Lena Road, according to Maryland State Police.

Estrella Caraballo, 84, of Boonsboro, died at Washington County Hospital and Darlene Sue Crowley, 54, also of Boonsboro, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit Sunday night, police said.

A white Nissan was westbound on U.S. 40 when it stopped to make a left turn onto Mount Lena Road at about 5 p.m., State Police Trooper Travis Brown said. A blue GMC SUV collided with the rear of the Nissan, sending it into the oncoming traffic lane, where it collided head-on with a black Chrysler PT Cruiser, Brown said. Police said the PT Cruiser attempted to avoid the crash and crossed into the westbound lanes, where it hit a guardrail.

Caraballo was the front-seat passenger in the Nissan and Crowley was in the back right passenger seat, police said. The driver and another back-seat passenger were taken to Washington County Hospital, one with minor injuries and the other in fair condition, police said.

The driver of the SUV and three passengers in the PT Cruiser - a mother and two children - were treated for minor injuries at Washington County Hospital, police said.

"This can be a pretty dangerous stretch," said Bob Spence, an EMT with Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Department. "People have a tendency to fly down this hill."

Maryland State Police closed U.S. 40 between Mount Lena Road and the entrance to Greenbrier State Park from 5 to 9 p.m. while investigators studied the scene, police said.
