MSO offers a Salute to Independence

September 14, 2007

Every year, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra performs a concert of patriotic music for a crowd of at least 35,000 at Antietam National Battlefield in connection with the nation's Fourth of July celebration.

People arrive early with blankets, lawn chairs, tents and picnic meals and make a day of it.

The tradition includes the firing of howitzers as the symphony plays Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's "1812" Overture and a fireworks finale.

The 2008 Salute to Independence concert is planned for July 5 at 7:30 p.m.
