The United Way of Washington County says it has raised more than $47 million since it opened its doors in 1957.

Although it belongs to the United Way of America, it is an independent organization with a local board of directors.

The United Way of Washington County, with offices at 33 W. Franklin St., Suite 203, funnels money to 25 local charities, including Community Action Council, Food Resources, Horizon Goodwill Industries and Community Free Clinic.

In its 2006 fundraising campaign, the local United Way met its goal of $1.75 million, its highest amount ever. This year's fundraising goal is $1.9 million.
