Mile-Long Plus Yard Sale is a local July 4 tradition

September 14, 2007

Some Americans celebrate their independence with fireworks. Others throw some hot dogs and burgers on the grill and gather friends and family for an afternoon picnic.

But just north of Hagerstown's city limits, thousands descend on the neighborhoods surrounding Paradise Church Road to celebrate that staple of the American free enterprise system - the yard sale.

A North Hagerstown tradition for nearly 30 years, the Mile-Long Plus Yard Sale stretches well beyond a mile and draws bargain hunters from well beyond Hagerstown.

"If you don't find it here, they don't make it or sell it," said organizer Dick Strobl, who also sells hot dogs at the event. This year, he sold nearly 700.

The annual Fourth of July sale kicks off at 7 a.m. It stretches in various directions from Paradise Church Road, including Paradise Drive, Long Ridge Drive, Longmeadow Road, Cherry Tree Circle, Wood Haven Road and Cherry Tree Lane, as well as the surrounding area.
