MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -A little bit of "Nunsense" never hurt anyone.

So say the cast and crew behind the Apollo Civic Theatre's production of "Nunsense 2: The Second Coming."

The theater will debut the musical Friday, Sept. 14. The production will run for two weekends, six shows.

There was a great deal of "nunsense" going on at a recent dress rehearsal, where one nun was clad in feather boa and another wore a cancan skirt.

"If you come out and can't get a chuckle out of this one, you'd better go back to Shakespeare," said Claudia J. Patterson of Charles Town. She's playing Sister Hubert, not the nun in the cancan skirt.

The caper is the second installment of New York writer/director's Dan Goggin's seven-part "Nunsense" series built around the hijinks of five nuns from Hoboken.

In "Nunsense 2," the five nuns are putting on a thank-you show for the people who supported them during the first "Nunsense."

All but one of the five actors cast said they had done the first "Nunsense" sequel before.

"What I encouraged them to do was find a new nuance with their character and to try something different, and they certainly went down that road," said director and choreographer Ray C. Shaw, who said he had directed "Nunsense 2" years ago in Cleveland.

Laura J. Speis (Sister Mary Leo) said she was new to the play.

"And I'm playing a novice (in the play), so I'm truly a novice," Speis said. "I think it was easier for me because I didn't have any preconceived notions about the role."

She is also the play's producer. "Which I will never do again," Speis said. "I will never produce and be in a show. It's too many hats and they're too conflicting. Directing and producing, it's OK, but acting and producing - not a good combination. For me."

Challenges aside, Speis and her fellow cast members said the audience is in for lots of laughs.

When asked why people should come out, actress Terri Magers, who plays the Reverend Mother, said, "Hello? I'm wearing an orange boa."
