ST. THOMAS, Pa. - A St. Thomas teenager was killed Tuesday afternoon when the car she was driving collided with a van on Leafmore Road, according to the Franklin County Coroner's Office.

Franklin County Deputy Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer said Brandy L. Thomas, 17, of 9957 Lincoln Way West, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:42 p.m. The cause of death was severe head trauma, he said.

The accident happened at 3:12 p.m. about 200 feet west of the Back Creek bridge on Leafmore Road, Peiffer said. Thomas was driving a Pontiac Sunfire west when it collided with an eastbound full-size van, Peiffer said.

Where the accident occurred, the road descends in an eastward curve to the bridge.

Pennsylvania State Police were investigating the crash, but the investigating trooper had not filed a press release as of 9 p.m. Details of the circumstances of the accident and the identity of the driver of the van were not available.

Leafmore Road from Hade Road east to Warm Spring Road was closed as police investigated the crash scene and the vehicles were removed on rollback trucks. The passenger side and rear of the car were heavily damaged, while the van appeared to have moderate front-end damage.

Peiffer said Thomas apparently was returning home from the Franklin County Career and Technology Center when the accident occurred.
