WASHINGTON COUNTY - The county has picked a new human resources director.

The Washington County Commissioners agreed Tuesday to hire George William Sonnik III at a salary of $75,000.

Sonnik will start Oct. 15, County Administrator Gregory Murray said.

The last person to hold the position was David Hankinson. The Herald-Mail reported in November 2006 that Hankinson was resigning to take a job in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Hankinson held the job for about three years.

Murray said Dee Hawbaker has served as the acting human resources director.

Sonnik attended Tuesday's meeting and thanked the commissioners for the opportunity to serve. He said he is scheduled to retire soon from Verizon after about 39 years.

Sonnik served on the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Board of Education from 1994 to 2002, when he lived in West Virginia.

After moving to Maryland, he ran unsuccessfully for the Washington County Board of Education in 2004.

Murray said during a break in Tuesday's meeting that Sonnik has experience in employment issues, unions and politics.

He said the county received 27 applications for the human resources job and interviewed seven finalists.

Commissioner Kristin B. Aleshire abstained from the vote to approve Sonnik. He said he was not part of the commissioners' discussion about Sonnik in a previous executive session.
