Infant's death not suspicious

September 11, 2007|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The death of an infant girl Sunday morning in the Berkeley County community of Darkesville, W.Va., is not being considered suspicious, according to Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Deputy Sgt. D.S. McGown.

"There was really nothing suspicious ... no signs of trauma, nothing like that," McGown said.

The 26-day-old infant's body was sent to the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner after the child apparently was smothered while sleeping with her mother and her mother's boyfriend at their home off Winchester Avenue, McGown said Monday.

At 9:17 a.m. Sunday, medics and Sheriff's Deputy S. Layne responded to a call for a report of cardiac arrest, but didn't make any attempt to revive the child after finding she had died, McGown said.
