Mail Call

September 11, 2007

"Fingerprinting of a child is always a good idea. My sister had her babies fingerprinted in case of kidnap. I commend the teachers anywhere for choosing a field that pays far less than other avenues they could have taken for their time and money on college. Takes a certain kind of person, with patience, to teach."

- Hagerstown

"I just received a permission slip for my two children to go on a field trip to D.C. The cost per child is $25 to pay for their ticket, the bus, and get this, the substitute teacher that has to come in for the kids not going on the trip. Plus they will be stopping at a fast-food place to eat. I have to send money for that as well. Does anyone else think this is crazy?"

- Smithsburg

"Why does school assign seats in cafeteria? Call the school instead of the newspaper. Let the school do their jobs. I am sure they have their reasons for assigned seats. Just thank God you have food to eat and a place to rest your laurels to eat it."

"I'm the person from West Virginia who called about putting the hospital at Robinwood instead of the Downsville Pike, and why would I worry about it? I lived in Hagerstown for the first 40 years of my life. I have just lived over here for the last five, and I still go to Washington County Hospital. If you put it at Robinwood, it's hard to get to. I know, I have a doctor out there. But the Downsville Pike has bus service and there's plenty of parking room out there, and there's plenty of room to build out and up if it needs be. The $10,000 was paid to make a suggestion on where to put it, and a suggestion was paid to put it on the Downsville Pike."

"This is just a kudos to the band director of the Boonsboro Middle School and to the band members, and to any other person or persons that was involved in this project. What a wonderful, wonderful thing to do. I think it's kudos to any school that can help those people out. Good job, and thanks for the kindness that you've showed upon the city or the town of Boonsboro."

"'Seniors, you may lose out,' end tax break on new homes for people ages 55 and up. What we need is some numbers that the public hasn't seen; what percentage of people who are 55 and up are building new houses, and then which elderly housing projects. I haven't seen any elderly housing projects. I've seen low-income housing projects but what specific old-age homes are we building that I'm not aware of? I might need one because I'm 55 and I was thinking of selling my house and moving to and building a smaller one."

- Hagerstown

"The pastor Joel Osteen was on Larry King, I guess six months ago or so, and he charges to get in to hear him preach. I think that is not good. Billy Graham, you didn't pay to get in to see dear old Billy Graham. He was so thankful to God that you would even enter to see him, but Joel told Larry King that he does charge admission to get in to hear him preach, which is not good. You would give the offering, but that's it."

"With all the moaning and groaning and complaining that goes on in this column, let me be one of the first to say what a beautiful, beautiful job they did on Northern Avenue. It's just like floating instead of riding, and the railroad tracks - if every railroad track crossing was done like that, people would have ... it's just a good job."

"To the Mail Caller who said I should listen to Fox for the truth: Well, no thank you. All I know is George Bush said we went to Iraq because Saddam Hussein was a threat to the U.S., that he had links to terrorists, that he was behind 9/11 and he had WMDs and a nuclear program. Those were all lies, so why did we go to Iraq? I hope your grandson knows, since he's now going to fight there, but I'm still a little confused, because the only thing I see is revenge against Bush's father being an attempt on his life, and oil - O-I-L - that's why we're in Iraq. If you're foolish enough to believe what they tell you on Fox ..."

"On Feb. 12, 2008, the citizens of Washington County will have a chance to vote on whether Washington County becomes a charter county or not, which means you're gonna have seven county council members instead of five - means there's gonna be two more people to pay. But the worst thing about the new charter is you will not have the oversight of the delegates and senators in Annapolis to keep the county council members, which are now county commissioners, straight. I recommend every one of you vote 'No' on the charter. Thank you."

"I am looking for a gentleman who has a business called 'The Dent Wizard.' He did work for us about a year and a half ago - good work - but we lost his business card and his telephone number. We know he's out of state, and he does work independently of car dealerships. If anyone knows his name or has his business telephone number, could you please put it in Mail Call? We would greatly appreciate it."
