Smoking cessation classes



FREDERICK, Md. - Two evening "Stop Smoking For Life" classes will be offered at Frederick County Health Department.

Dates for the classes are today, through Thursday, Sept. 27; and Monday, Oct. 15, through Thursday, Nov. 1. The classes meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at the health department building, 350 Montevue Lane, Entrance D, Room 2-139. The classes are free. YMCA fitness classes



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg YMCA will begin a seven-week session of the following fitness and wellness programs today. The classes are:

Healthy balance - A nutrition education program for people seeking to improve their dietary habits. By appointment only.

Qigong - A meditative martial art that improves mental focus, balance, flexibility and core strength. Classes begin Sept. 12 and go seven consecutive Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m.

Walk fit and strong - A beginning or returning-to exercise program developed to help all ages and abilities improve aerobic capacity and core strengthening. The class is offered Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursdays, from 6 to 7 a.m.

CorePole - Small group exercise classes designed to enhance aerobic conditioning, muscular strength and balance. All fitness levels and ages older than 11 are welcome.

CorePole class times are:

·Coed conditioning - Monday and Wednesday 5:15 to 6 p.m., or Saturday, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

·For mature men - Tuesday, 11 to 11:45 a.m.

·For mature women -Thursday, 11 to 11:45 a.m.

·Pilates - Monday, Wednesday, 11 to 11:45 a.m.

Alzheimer's education



"Introduction to Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia - A Family Presentation" will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. today, at Volunteer Fire Department of Halfway, 11114 Lincoln Ave., Hagerstown. The program is free. To register, call Alzheimer's Association at 301-696-0315.

Avoiding hypertension program



Dietary Approach to Stopping Hypertension (DASH) will be held 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Thursdays Sept. 20, 27, Oct. 4 and 11, at Walnut Street Community Health Center. Join licensed nutritionist Tammy Thornton from Washington County Health Department and discover which foods can make a positive difference.
