The South Hagerstown High School Class of 1961 held its annual picnic at Doub's Woods on July 19.

Approximately 80 people attended, including classmates, spouses, and faculty from South High who taught during the 1960-61 school year.

Classmates traveled from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina to attend. Each classmate supplied a covered dish. Fried chicken was provided by Buddy Davis of Lady Lake, Fla., who was unable to attend the event.

The 71st anniversary reunion of the Hagerstown High School Class of 1936 was held June 30 at Fountain Head Country Club. Twenty-nine classmates and 29 guests attended the luncheon.

The invocation was given by John W. Whitmore. After a luncheon of crab cakes and chicken marsala, music was provided by the Rhinelanders German Band.


A tribute was given to the class members who died in the past year: Edward Shepley, Richard Messersmith, Norman Bentz and Evelyn Weber Grimm.

The entertainment continued with songs played on the harmonica by Merle Barlup. This was followed by a sing-along led by John W. Whitmore. Door prizes were provided by Henrietta Johnson Burns and Helen Keller Kepner.

The reunion committee included Helen Zentmyer Kreykenbohm, chairperson; Norman Holzapfel, Belle Kretzer Greenfield, Helen Rohrer Smeak, Hilda Miller Sprecher, Helen Keller Kepner, Henrietta Johnson Burns, Mildred Lefevre, Kathryn Mowrer Latimer, Genevieve Wyant, John W. Whitmore and Merle Barlup.

The program booklet was given by the family of Max O. Mogensen.

The benediction was given by Genevieve Wyant.

The 72nd reunion will be held at Fountain Head Country Club at noon on Saturday, June 21, 2008.
