Two charged with DUI during check

Two people were charged with driving under the influence and another was charged with a probation violation during a sobriety checkpoint in the 300 block of Eastern Boulevard North, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Melissa Jane Cook, 25, of Smithsburg, and William Charles Norris III, 43, of Maugansville, each were charged with DUI, police said.

Darin Kip Walden, 42, of Hagerstown, was charged with violation of probation, police said.

The checkpoint began Friday night at 9 p.m. and ended Saturday morning at 3 a.m., police said.

The checkpoint was held in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Checkpoint Strikeforce program.

Pa. state police probe 402 offenses in county

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police in Franklin County investigated 402 criminal offenses in August, according to the barrack's monthly activity report.

Troopers cleared 237 cases and made 227 arrests during the month, according to the report.


There were no fatal crashes in August, but 66 people were injured in 180 vehicle accidents. There also were seven hit-and-run accidents, police said.

Thirty-one people were charged with driving under the influence, and there were 10 driving under the influence-related accidents, police said.

Troopers handed out 669 traffic citations and 215 warnings, according to the report.

Pa. man charged with retail theft

SCOTLAND, Pa. - A Newburg, Pa., man was charged with retail theft Wednesday after allegedly stealing a $9,652 ring on Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Anthony Blaine August, 21, address unavailable, was charged with the theft of the 14-carat white gold ring with a 1.18-carat diamond setting, police said.

The ring was taken Tuesday between 5 and 5:30 p.m. from Belle Jewelers, police said.
