Hagerstown woman charged in shooting

A Hagerstown resident was arrested early Saturday following a shooting in the 100 block of East Avenue, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Eunice Elaine Ashkettle, 56, of 136 East Ave., was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, discharging a firearm in city limits and malicious destruction of property, police said.

Someone shot out a door window at 135 East Ave., police said. During the investigation, a shotgun was found at 136 East Ave., police said.

The shooting apparently was the result of an earlier incident involving Ashkettle and the residents of 135 East Ave., police said.


The front door and awning at 135 East Ave. were damaged, police said.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred about 3 a.m., police said.

Alleged cocaine buy leads to charges

A Hagerstown man was arrested Friday night after a confidential drug informant allegedly bought crack cocaine from him, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Denroy Lucien Defreitas, 21, of 30 S. Colonial Drive, No. 4, in Hagerstown, was charged with two counts of possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine, two counts of possession of crack cocaine, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count each of possession of marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and resisting arrest, police said.

The alleged sale occurred in the 500 block of North Cramers Alley, police said. Defreitas allegedly sold $50 worth of crack cocaine to the informant, police said.

Officers followed Defreitas, who drove off in a Dodge Charger with police following on foot. He tried to run away, but officers tackled him, police said.

When police searched Defreitas, they seized 25 individual baggies of marijuana, crack cocaine and $1,407 in cash

Defreitas was being held without bond Saturday night at the Washington County Detention Center.
