Big Sydney's been lonely too long

September 07, 2007|By BIG SYDNEY

Living a football life is a lonely existence.

No one seems to be able to hang with my grueling schedule.

The coaching-shorts and striped-shirt wardrobe is so limiting. It's tough to make a fashion statement.

It's tough to get a rhythm with that five-months-on, seven-off setup.

The Friday-Sunday work week is nerve-wracking.

Trying to make sure there's no trans fat in my fried banana sandwiches is even tougher.

So I feel so all alone with the start of a new football season.

I realized it as I was sitting there in my favorite spot in Dargan where you can see all the games on satellite while eating your evening meal. You know, the DirecTV Dinner.

I needed a football companion. Someone to discuss the Wing-T with. Someone to line a playing field with.

So I got bold. I marched right down to Dargan's Father's Day and magazine shop - Pa Prints - and turned to the personals to look for a football friend.

I didn't know they were so hard to read, but I got the hang of it. Here are a couple of examples.

THROWN TO THE WOLVES(RINES)

ECC-B, looks for a better fall after a bad fall into a deep hole; used to leading pack, but looking at a lot of butts right now; prefers happy valleys over Appalachians, likes cheese but thinks buckeyes are nutty. ISO an understanding friend. Call for Pink Lloyd.

FEELING HOUNDED

FH with lots of time, ISO some puppy love; needs to regain pedigree. Enjoys Snoop Dogg, hates Elvis' Hound Dog. Used to like cookouts, byt staying away from hot dogs. Has some time to exchange a few words before beginning a sentence. Ask for E-Vicked-ed QB.

I can see this isn't going to be easy ... Lonely doesn't seem so bad, considering the choices.

On with the predictions. Last season: 174-60 (.744).
