Last week: This is the season opener for both teams.

Notes: This is the first regular-season game for head coach Craig Bathgate, who was an assistant coach at North Hagerstown for eight years. ... Bathgate is the only new head coach in the area this season. ... The Blazers have just two wins in their first three seasons as a varsity program. ... The Saints have lost 22 straight games. Their last win came Oct. 15, 2004, a 14-0 victory over Friends. ... The Saints have scored more than one touchdown in a game just three times during their losing streak and have been shut out nine times, including a streak of five straight scoreless games last season. ... The team that started the Saints' losing streak: Hancock, which scored a 28-23 win on Oct. 22, 2004.

Heritage (Va.) Pride (0-1) at North Hagerstown Hubs (8-4)

Last week: The Pride lost to South Lakes (Va.), 12-7. ... This is the season opener for the Hubs.

Notes: The Pride has lost five of six games dating back to last year. They have scored 14 or fewer points in each of those losses. ... Heritage played without its top two quarterbacks. ... RB Ross Madison ran for 134 yards and a TD on 21 carries. ... The Hubs have won their last four season openers, scoring no fewer than 27 points. ... The Hubs are seeking their fourth playoff berth in the last five years. Prior to their current run, the Hubs had only been to the playoffs once - in 1990, when coach Dan Cunningham was the team's junior quarterback. ... The Hubs were moved to the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Conference this season. ... The Hubs return their top two running backs from last season, Diez Johnson and Justin Donaldson.

Notes: The teams met in the second game of the 2003 and 2004 seasons. ... The Knights were in the hunt for a Class 2A West playoff berth until the final week of the season last year. ... Last season was the first that the Knights did not finish with a losing record since the program began in 2002. ... The Knights were moved from the MVAL Piedmont to the new MVAL Blue Ridge this season. ... The Rebels are seeking their first winning season since going 8-4 and winning their first playoff game in 2002. ... The Rebels were moved to the MVAL Piedmont Conference this season. ... The Rebels had a four-game winning streak sandwiched between two three-game losing streaks last season. ... Greg Kellick is entering his 20th season as South's head coach.

Moorefield Yellow Jackets (0-2) at Boonsboro Warriors (8-3)

Last week: The Yellow Jackets lost to Keyser, 40-14. ... This is the season opener for the Warriors.

Notes: Moorefield was tied 7-7 early against Keyser, but allowed two interceptions that were returned for scores. ... Despite giving up 40 points, the Yellow Jackets' defense had one interception and three fumble recoveries. ... The Warriors made their second straight Class 1A West playoff appearance and won their second straight MVAL Antietam title last season. ... The Warriors have only two offensive starters and no defensive starters returning from last season. ... The Warriors' offense will rely heavily on RB Ryan McLean, now in his third vasrity season.

Smithsburg Leopards (5-5) at Northern Garrett Huskies (5-5)

Series: Smithsburg leads, 4-1.

Last meeting: 2003 - Smithsburg, 48-6.

Last week: This is the season opener for both teams.

Notes: Two of the five meetings between the teams were in the playoffs. The Leopards knocked out the Huskies in the first round of the 1991 postseason; the Huskies returned the favor in the first round in 1992. ... The Leopards are seeking their first winning season and playoff berth since 2004, when they went 9-3. ... The Leopards are one of the early favorites in the realigned MVAL Antietam. ... The Leopards return QB Bryan Faulders and WR Kevin Kocsis, who was one of the top receivers in the area last year. ... The five teams the Huskies beat in 2006 had a combined record of 10-40.
