Fire, burglary might be related, police say

September 06, 2007

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Police said they believe a suspicious fire and a burglary Tuesday night at a home at 1700 South Childs Road might be related.

Firefighters were called to the mobile home off W.Va. 51 about 8:46 p.m. and found about half of the home engulfed in flames, said Ed Smith, chief of Independent Fire Co.

The mobile home was owned by Joan Wallen, but it was not clear how much time she spent there, Smith said. No one was home at the time, Smith said.

The fire is suspected to be arson and it is possible that the people who committed the burglary started the fire, said West Virginia State Police Senior Trooper David Heil.

A motive for the acts has not been determined, Heil said.
