Mail Call

"Recipe for certain political strife: Tyranny of the majority. If 51 percent of Berkeley County votes for zoning, the other 49 percent will be out for blood. No one can deliberately destroy another's property values without consequence."

? Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I don't know where you people who are living in Williamsport are, that are complaining about Williamsport being so 'trashy'. I live in Williamsport, and from what I see it's not trashy at all. We have a beautiful park, the streets are clean, the people are friendly. Quit being such nitpickers and agitators. If you see a little trash, dispose of it properly."

"A lot of taxpayer money is being spent to buy the development rights of farms which I don't believe would ever have been developed. Why not buy the rights of farms in and around towns and developments instead of out in the country?"

"There's a lot of talk lately in Mail Call about cats, and a lot of people seem to be misinformed. They seem to think it's OK if cats just run loose all over the countryside. Cats are not wild animals. They start out as people's pets. Some people are too lazy to take care of their own pets, and they end up in other people's yard. Many areas have large populations of feral cats, which is basically cats that people have abandoned. Cats that are left outside kill thousands, if not millions, of songbirds every year, and there's no reason for it. As far as the person who's trapping them and taking them to the SPCA, I was doing the same thing, and I'll continue to do it. It's not my fault they have to be put to death. It's the fault of the people who are too irresponsible to take care of their own pets. Cats belong in your house."

"In response to the person in Mail Call who said they're trapping cats, that cats shouldn't be left out. Many cat owners do not leave their cats outside, but sometimes they get out. Cats are very mischievous little creatures, and sometimes they'll get out, and you just have to wait for them to come back. You're trapping these cats, and I know personally, I have a granddaughter who is autistic and she has a cat who she loves dearly. If she happens to get out, she just has a big meltdown. So think about that when you're trapping them. If they come up missing, maybe you have a child waiting."

"Responding to the people complaining on Northern Avenue because it's being worked on: I'm one of these people who complained when it wasn't being worked on, as well as how many countless others who live in this area complained about it. Now that it's being worked on, you're complaining about it being worked on and being fixed. You may not be happy with the speed and progress at which it goes, however, they're fixing it. So what's the problem? Do you want it fixed or not, or should they have just left it the way it was?"

"This is regarding the credit cards and mortgages that people are having trouble with. You mean to tell me that they can't add up their bills and put their paycheck beside it and decide that they can't afford this?"

? Hagerstown

"To the people complaining about children being fingerprinted in the schools: It is not mandatory, but God bless if anything should happen, such as a catastrophe in a fire or anything in the schools, the fingerprints could identify the victims."

? Jefferson County, W.Va.

"The BOE's budget has completely doubled in the last 10 years. Students must buy and bring to the classroom supplies necessary for learning. Is there something wrong with this picture?"

? Clear Spring

"This is my view on Sen. Craig's recent arrest. If there is so much hanky-panky going on in public bathrooms, why aren't the partitions built to the floor? This is more sensible than paying policemen top wages to sit in an adjacent booth waiting for some action. And how would anyone know who's telling the truth in this case? David Letterman even had the nerve to ask Hillary Clinton what she thought of the so-called affair. She laughed and said it would be up to the people of Idaho to determine his fate. Now the Clintons should talk."

"This is in regards to a Falling Waters, W.Va. person. Number one, what do you care where our hospital is built, and why should we build on Downsville Pike? You don't live in Hagerstown, you don't live in Washington County. You live in West Virginia, so you have your own hospital over there. I guess you want it on Downsville Pike so it'd be closer for you if something happens. Well, too bad. We don't want it down there. It's too far out of town for even elderly people to get to. So why should we move out of town miles away? It needs to go to Robinwood, where everything else is. I work there, and I want it there, just like a lot of other Hagerstown people. We live here; you don't."
