September 05, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police are searching for a suspect in an Aug. 19 incident in which two men attempting to steal a $4,000 lawn tractor from Lowe's led police on a chase that ended in the Potomac River.

The Martinsburg Police Department has issued a warrant for the arrest of Vincent Mahoney, 40, charging him with grand larceny.

The warrant was issued after police spotted two men attempting to load a John Deere lawn tractor into the back of a Mercury Villager van on Aug. 19 about 2:12 a.m. at Lowe's on Apple Harvest Drive in Martinsburg. The men had cut the mower from a security chain, police said.

When police arrived, the men left the mower and drove north on Interstate 81 in the van. Police chased them on the highway, then on foot after they left the vehicle in Morgan County. The driver jumped into the Potomac River and swam away, and the passenger was not found, police said.
