Service of Remembrance is scheduled for Sunday

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The annual Service of Remembrance for those who died Sept. 11 will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Letterkenny Chapel at Letterkenny Army Depot.

The speaker will be Col. Philip A. Mahalic, a U.S. Army chaplain who recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq and is assigned to the Carlisle (Pa.) War College. He also has spent time in Kuwait and Qatar.

Mahalic began his military career in 1969 when he entered the R.O.T.C. program at Rutgers University. He has dedicated 38 years of his life through the Guard, Reserves and active duty.

Mahalic was ordained a Catholic priest in 1983 upon completion of his schooling at St. Meinard Seminary, where he received a master of divinity degree. He received his doctor of ministry degree from Christian Theological Seminary in 1993.


Music for the service will be provided by Joan Sachs and soloist Martin Wenger.

Charles F. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 will present the colors and lead military honors in front of the chapel as the service concludes.

An offering will be taken to support the continuing work of the chapel in the community.

The service is sponsored by the United Churches of the Chambersburg Area.

The public is invited to attend.
