HALFWAY - The Washington County Junior Football League held its annual Opening Ceremonies on Labor Day, followed by three football matchups - both including 'A' games for seventh and eighth graders and 'B' games for fifth and sixth graders.

"This is the largest group of players that we have ever had," league president Pete Buonocore said. "There are about 1,000 players in the league."

· The Smithsburg Patriots pulled out a 6-0 win over the Hagerstown Giants in a rematch of last year's 'A' title game.

Thomas Smith scored the only touchdown, breaking loose along the left sideline for a 35-yard scoring run for the Patriots 2:42 before halftime. Smith gained 72 yards on nine carries.

Ryan Bolton recovered a fumble for the Patriots with 2:01 remaining. The Patriots ran out the clock to seal the victory.

The Patriots defense held the Giants to 39 yards.

"There were a lot of good games today," Buonocore said. "The final game was a rematch ... but it was a different outcome today. The Giants were undefeated in the previous two years."

In the 'B' game, the Giants edged the Patriots, 7-0.

Nick Karlen scored the only touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak for the Giants. Karlen threw a one-point conversion pass to Crosse Barvinchack.
