Forestry tour at Pa. campus for woods owners soon

September 04, 2007

The Cumberland Woodland Owners Association is sponsoring a forestry tour for woodland owners at the Penn State Mont Alto campus on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The event will last from 12:45 to 5 p.m.

Forestry staff and students will give a short tour of the campus highlighting the history of forestry there and what is happening today, said George Hurd, environmental/residential development educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension.

He said the TIMBERSPORTS team will demonstrate the events in which they compete, including speed chopping, axe throw and pole climb.

The group will then tour the Waynesboro Watershed to see where the forestry students put into practice what they learn in class. The group will see examples of forestry practices and management.

After the tour, the association is hosting a pot-luck covered dish and hotdog roast picnic at Mont Alto Park.

Those who wish to stay and eat should bring a covered dish to share, Hurd said.

Admission is free but registration is requested. Call either Mike Waldron at 717-677-7317 or 253-4551 (cell) or Fred Peabody at 717-776-3565 or 418-9221 (cell). Leave your name, your phone number, how many are coming, and if you are staying for the picnic.

Registration deadline is Sept. 20.

If it rains enough to cancel on the 29th, everyone who registers will be called, Hurd said.

The tour rain date is Sept. 29. The tour will start at the main parking lot of Penn State Mont Alto at 12:45 pm on Sept. 22, he said.
