Hagerstown school wants to rename stadium

HAGERSTOWN - Students and staff at South Hagerstown High School are working to rename their stadium.

The structure known as School Stadium once was shared by South Hagerstown and North Hagerstown high schools.

"Now that North High has its own stadium, and there's no longer a reason to have a generic name for this stadium, we need to take ownership of it as South Hagerstown High School in name," school business manager David Hedges said. "We maintain it and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it."

The first game at North Hagerstown's new Mike Callas Stadium was played last year.

Bob Hornbecker has taught at South Hagerstown for 36 years, and said the agreement with North Hagerstown was in place since 1956, when School Stadium was built. The schools did not begin sharing the stadium until the following year, he said.

"The deal was that we had the football stadium, and we were going to share with North, and North had the big auditorium," Hornbecker said. "Of course, we've never used their auditorium ever, and they've used the stadium lots. The deal never worked out the way it was envisioned."

Hedges said that South Hagerstown's Student Government Association is drafting a petition to change the stadium's name. He said that three-quarters of the school's population is required to sign the petition, which will be submitted to the Washington County Board of Education.

If the petition is signed by the required number of students, the board will allow public comment, he said.

Hedges said he wasn't sure when the petition would begin circulating throughout the school, but he said there was "no rush" to pursue the name change.

Some name suggestions have included South High Stadium, South Hagerstown High School Stadium and SHHS Stadium, Hedges said.

When both schools first began using School Stadium, Hornbecker said the only sport played there was football. Now, football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and field events are held there. The marching band also uses the field.

"(School Stadium) could be any school anywhere," Hornbecker said. "It's such a generic name. It may increase school spirit to know we're playing at South Hagerstown field."
