Charter rule - Know More

September 02, 2007

The issue: Washington County is considering the best way to switch to charter home rule, a form of government that allows more flexibility in enacting laws.

What happened: A board has created a draft charter that calls for a county council with five members at first, then seven members starting in 2010.

What's next: The board wants public feedback before the draft charter is discussed in October by the Washington County Commissioners. County residents will vote on the charter on Feb. 12, 2008, the day of Maryland's primary election.
