Q&A with coach Buddy Orndorff

Q: How would you describe the state of your program?

A: "We're young and we have 32 juniors out of 53 on the team. They're nice kids and they really like to hit."

Q: How would you sum up the 2006 season?

A: "It was disappointing. I think we should have won seven games. We had a couple of games get away from us that were in our grasp. I thought we would have gotten more out of the group we had last year."

Q: Who are your top returning skill position players?

A: "We've got Bryan Faulders (6-3, 185-pound senior) at quarterback; Bobby Smith (5-11, 185, Sr.) at tailback and Kevin Kocsis (5-11, 160, Sr.) at wide receiver. And Kocsis is a good returner also."

Q: Who are the top returning players at these positions?

Offensive line:

A: "We have Steve Whitt (6-3, 230, Sr.) at guard and Michael Lawrence (6-0, 155, Jr.) at center. These are the main guys we'll run behind.

Defensive line:

A: "Dan Rishell (6-5, 185, Jr.) is the only returning player on the line."

Linebackers:

A: "Brandon Knight (6-0, 175, Sr.) is the only linebacker with experience."

Secondary:

A: "Again, we look to Kocsis. He's the only guy in the secondary.

Q: Who is the one departed player who will be the most difficult to replace?

A: "Well, obviously it would be Chad Brown. He really did a nice job for us. We might have some guys in the mix to replace him. Right now, I've got five guys working between tailback and fullback."

Q: Who are the "unknown" or new players who could make an impact in 2007?

A: "That's unknown right now. We've had a limited amount of contact so right now it's hard to tell. We won't know until we get through the scrimmages."

Q: What is the biggest challenge your team will face this season?

A: "Again I think it is our schedule. We start with Southern Garrett and they are a load this year. then we have Poolesville and they are a load and have an outstanding quarterback. Then we have Winters Mill and they're led by a kid that has signed at West Virginia. That's a tough start."

Q: What things must this team do to improve over the 2006 season?

A: "We have to improve better overall against the run. I think we'll have good skill at linebacker and in the secondary. On offense, we have to be better blockers. We've got to get our playmakers the ball and let them go."
