Music classes

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University Department of Music Preparatory Division is accepting applications for the fall 2007 semester.

Students interested in studying woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, voice, guitar, bass guitar, strings (violin, viola, cello or double bass), theory or jazz improvision should contact Anne Munro at 304-876-5555 or e-mail amunro@shepherd.edu. Instructors set their own weekly lesson fees and teach half-hour and hour lessons. Registration fee is $25 per semester.

Chance McCoy, West Virginia fiddle champion, will offer lessons in traditional fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo. Call for information.

Musical Discoveries classes will be offered to preschool students. Preschoolers have the option of attending a Tuesday or Friday morning class. Classes include Baby and Me for 4 months through 18 months, 10 a.m. Tuesdays; Musical Discoveries for 18 months through 3 years are at 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. Fridays; and music class for 4 and 5 year olds, a Dalcroze Eurhythmics based class 9:15 a.m. Fridays. $156 per semester and runs for 13 weeks beginning Sept. 11.

September classes

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Adams County Arts Council's Imagination Station classes begin in September. Some of the classes offered include:

· So You Want to be Published? - 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, Sept. 5 through 26. Instructor is A.D. Tarbox.

· Drawing in the Style of the Renaissance Masters - 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 6 through 27. Instructor is Amy Thrush-Dreves.

· Introduction to Perspective Drawing - 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 10 and 17, Wednesdays, Sept. 12 and 19. Instructor is Lisa Harman.

· Tiles, Tiles and More Tiles - 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 24 through Oct. 15. Instructor is Lori Nelson.

Fall gardening 101

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County Master Gardeners will offer "Fall Gardening 101." Classes meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays, Sept. 8, through Oct. 6. Classes are:

· Sept. 8 - Turf establishment and care. Participants will learn about lawn management, including how to establish a new lawn as well as how to repair a drought-damaged lawn. Home horticulture educator Bob Kessler will offer the details of fall lawn care and renovation, and will give tips on dealing with damage from grubs in the lawn.

· Sept. 15 - Backyard habitat workshop. Five Franklin County Master Gardeners will teach participants the principles of attracting wildlife to their gardens and landscapes. Ray Eckhart will show how he created a wildflower meadow at the horticultural center; Chris Mayer will offer information about attracting butterflies, pollinators and beneficial insects; Anne Finucane will discuss attracting birds to your property and Linda Secrist and Jane Krumpe will present a segment of water features.

· Sept. 22 - Preparing your yard for next year. Topics will include overwintering tender plants, fall pruning of shrubs and small trees, flower bed preparation, bulb planting, and fall cleanup and fertilizing.

· Oct. 6 - House plants and propagation. Master Gardener Linda Secrist will teach participants how to take plant cuttings, diagnose plant diseases and prepare plants for winter. She invites her students to bring along any problem houseplants to the class.

Classes cost $5 per person per workshop. Registration is required. Call 717-263-9226.
