Suns tarnish Shorebirds

August 30, 2007

Well, eight out of nine isn't bad if you are a Delmarva Shorebird.

Delmarva scored in every inning but the eighth - including six runs in the first - to overwhelm the Hagerstown Suns 14-1 Thursday at Municipal Stadium.

The Shorebirds put all 14 of their runs on the board before the Suns averted the shutout with their only score in the ninth. Robert Tolan led off with a double and scored on Trevor Lawhorn's two-out RBI single.

Delmarva all but put the game out of reach in the first inning with six runs off starter Jeff Mandel.

Todd Davison had a two-run single and David Cash added a bases-loaded triple to stake Delmarva to the early lead.

The Shorebirds followed by scoring single runs in the second through sixth innings with one more in the ninth. They also had a two-run seventh.

Mandel (3-7) allowed eight runs on eight hits in three innings.

Delmarva managed 16 hits as Billy Rowell and Davison had three each. Shorebirds starter Cole McCurry allowed two hits over six innings for the win.

Lawhorn finished with two of the Suns' five hits.
