CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A night of drinking was followed by tragedy early Thursday when a 1999 Volkswagen carrying three people flipped on Ridge Road, killing the driver, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and other officials.

Jacob Aaron Winelander, 21, of 910 N.E. 7th Ave. in Delray Beach, Fla., was killed in the 12:55 a.m. crash, according to a sheriff's department crash report and Jefferson County Medical Examiner Donald Shirley.

Chelsey DeMarino, 20, of 37 Grant Court in Charles Town, and William Scott Bradley, 26, of 7375 Shepherdstown Pike in Shepherdstown, W.Va., also were in the car, according to the sheriff's department.

It was not clear if the passengers were injured, and sheriff's department officials could not provide more details Thursday afternoon.

Bradley said in a statement to police that he, DeMarino and another person were at his house drinking, according to police.

The three wanted to go to "Tony's," but they could not get in because DeMarino did not have a college ID, Bradley said in his statement.

The three were on their way to get DeMarino's ID when the accident occurred near Luther Jones Road, according to the crash report.

DeMarino said in a statement to police that Winelander had been drinking and the car started swerving.

"Before I knew it, the car had flipped," DeMarino told police.

Winelander was unconscious after the crash, DeMarino said.

Shirley said Winelander was not wearing a seat belt.

Winelander was a part-time cook in a dining hall at Shepherd University, and he worked his last shift on the job just before the crash, Shepherd spokeswoman Valerie Owens said.
