Smithsburg High School

Smithsburg High School held its graduation ceremony June 8 at The Maryland Theatre. Washington County Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Morgan assisted Principal Melvin G. Whitfield in presenting diplomas to members of the Class of 2007.

Valedictorian Umar Anwar Qadri spoke on the topic, "Becoming the Known Citizen." The son of Anwar Qadri and Dr. Samina Anwar was involved in many school organizations, including Student Government Association, National Honor Society and academic team. He enjoys playing such sports as tennis, table tennis and basketball with his friends, as well as reading and socializing with his friends. He plans to major in religion, history or philosophy at Yale University, then hopes to attend medical school and one day become a doctor.

Salutatorian Brittany Rene Clevenger spoke on the topic, "Dream On." The daughter of Lori Clevenger was active in the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, indoor and outdoor color guard, academic team and Latin Club. She also studies dance at Dancin' Time Studios and is a member of the Pleasant Walk United Methodist Youth Group. She plans to study aerospace and astronautical engineering at Massachusette Institute of Technology.
