Berkeley Co. Schools to send supply lists to vendors

August 22, 2007|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Based on a directive from the president of the State Board of Education, Berkeley County Schools will reissue the recommended school supply lists beginning today to all local vendors, Jaimee Borger, the school district's communications director, announced on Tuesday.

"Please visit your local merchant to receive these lists," Borger said.

The school district's announcement comes after state officials recently indicated the lists were not in violation of policy.

State education leaders also clarified what schools were required to provide that was "integral and fundamental" to learning.

For this year, leaders in Berkeley County principals agreed to an $11 increase in the per-student allocation for classroom materials, including pens, pencils, paper and calculators.

The increase from $39 to $50, based on last year's enrollment of 16,322 in Berkeley County, would raise the district's budget for materials by nearly $180,000, to about $816,000.

Superintendent Manny P. Arvon II said on Monday that the county's projected increase in enrollment for the coming academic year is expected to be 500 to 700 additional students.
