West Hagerstown Lions stay busy

Several members of the West Hagerstown Lions Club attended the Change of the Banner in Western Maryland on July 15 to honor outgoing District Gov. John Hopkins.

West Hagerstown Lions Club President Jim Gossard received the District Governor's Award for the outstanding job he did during 2006-07. Donna Jackman received the 100 Percent Secretary Award for meeting all the criteria that was required of each secretary in the district. She also received recognition for her service to the district as diabetes awareness chairman.

The West Hagerstown club has three new members: Jim Roby Jr., Lowell Jackman and Teresa Ferenz.

On June 18, Buck Fisher installed the officers for the 2007-08 year: Gossard, president; Jackman, secretary/treasurer; Mark Smith, first vice president; Clarence Koontz, tail twister; and Ike Doleman, Lion tamer.

Some past activities of the West Hagerstown Lions Club included selling steamers and hot dogs during Railroad Heritage Days, June 9 and 10; the annual family picnic at Funkstown Community Park, Aug. 6; and parking cars at the Leitersburg Peach Festival, with the help of Boy Scout Troop 64, Aug. 11 and 12.

Upcoming events include the Rouzerville picnic on Sept. 4 and the Bulldog Viking Roundup, Sept. 15, where local Lions clubs will sell a variety of food, starting with pancakes at 6:30 a.m. There will be tours of Mack Trucks and for $1, visitors can drive a truck.

There also will be free carnival rides and games for children. Admission is free, and the event will end at 5 p.m. All proceeds will go to local charities.
