Graduates receive scholarships from Lions

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Lions Club honored two 2007 graduates with scholarships on July 25 at the club's annual picnic at Smithsburg Lions Club Park.

· Laura Lynn Jacques, a graduate of Grace Academy, received the Joseph and Michael Award in 2007 for Christian character and the Maryland Merit Scholastic Award in 2007 for cumulative average in the top 5 percent of her classes. She also received the Tom Altizer Memorial Scholarship.

Laura was valedictorian of her graduating class and played soccer for two years at Grace Academy. She also was on the Grace Academy yearbook staff in 2006. She is a member of Ringgold Church of Christ and has traveled on mission trips to Ecuador and Costa Rica, and to an Indian reservation in South Dakota. She has taken 13 credits at Hagerstown Community College and has a 4.0 grade-point average.

Laura, the daughter of Walt and Jody Jacques, plans to attend Hagerstown Community College and major in radiography.

· Rebecca Ann Stouffer, a graduate of Smithsburg High School, was on the honor roll, distinguished honor roll and Success through Academic Recognition in all four years of high school. A member of the National Honor Society, she also received varsity letters in track and field and volleyball. She earned the Senior Athletic Award, Monocacy Valley Athletic League, Faculty Honor Award and Student Service Learning Senior Honor. She was a member of the All County Orchestra for four years, Spanish Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was a member of student government for four years.

Rebecca is a member of Ringgold Church of Christ, has been a member of the church choir and went on two mission trips with the church. She was on the YMCA swim team and played in the Orchestra Quartet. She has worked at the concession stand for the Steam and Craft Show, been a camp counselor at Tri-State Christian Service Camp, served as a Salvation Army bell ringer and was a tutor at Smithsburg Middle School.

Rebecca, the daughter of Dave and Rhonda Stouffer, plans to attend Eastern Mennonite University in the fall.

The Smithsburg Lions Club serves Smithsburg and surrounding communities.
