Franklin County YMCAs to host "High School Musical 2" parties

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA and the Waynesboro YMCA are among the more than 500 YMCAs across the country that will host parties this weekend to celebrate the premiere of the Disney Channel movie "High School Musical 2."

Chambersburg will host its party today from 8 to 10 p.m., and Waynesboro will host its party from 7:45 to 10 p.m.

"I would say that even from the elementary age to the teenagers, they are all fanatical about it," said Melanie Cook, preschool and teen director at the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA. "It's extremely popular."

Although Cook is uncertain what it is about the movie that has made it so popular, she said it might be the music.

"We have had so many phone calls - parents telling me their 4-year-old is excited about the movie (and) from juniors in high school," said Matt Rhyne, youth and teen director at the Waynesboro YMCA.

Chambersburg and Waynesboro's parties both are free, however, Chambersburg's party is only open to those participating in its summer camps because part of the building currently is under construction.

"We have limited space to show our movie," Cook said.

The Waynesboro YMCA party is open to anyone.

Both parties will have prizes including the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack, beach balls, 7-foot posters of the movie characters, souvenir cups and golf packets.

"All the kids will get their pictures taken," next to one of the life-size posters, Rhyne said.

Materials for the parties were supplied by the YMCA of the U.S.A. in conjunction with Disney, Cook said.

"What we try to do at the Y is we try to provide positive family opportunities, so that's kind of why Disney and the YMCA have partnered for a movie," Rhyne said.

The movie is the sequel to "High School Musical," which premiered in January 2006 to 7.7 million viewers. It is the story of two unlikely teenagers who try out for the school play. Troy, a basketball player and Gabriella, a math and science genius, meet while on a New Year's Eve vacation, and they realize they have a common interest in singing.

After the vacation, Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his school, East High, and the two decide to audition for the school play. However, Ryan Evans and his sister, Sharpay, known for their theatrical talents, try to thwart Troy and Gabriella's auditions.
