Fire displaces family near Cascade

August 16, 2007

CASCADE - Two adults and two young children were displaced from their home by a fire Wednesday morning at 760 Cushman Ave. on the former Fort Ritchie U.S. Army base, according to emergency officials.

The fire was reported at 7:42 a.m. Personnel from Smithsburg, Leitersburg, Franklin County, Pa., and Frederick County, Md., responded along with the Washington County air and rehab units.

The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross sent a disaster representative to the scene around 11 a.m. to see to the needs of the family who rented the single-family home, according to Mike Mowen, disaster specialist for the chapter.

"We provided emergency assistance, which included housing for three days in Hagerstown and a voucher for food," Mowen said.

The fire heavily damaged the first floor, especially the kitchen and dining room, Mowen said. Smoke damaged the upstairs but some of the residents' clothing was salvageable.
