County athletes start following bouncing balls

August 16, 2007

Athletes from Washington County's seven public high schools hit the practice fields for the first time Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming fall sports season.

Although most teams held voluntary conditioning sessions for their athletes throughout the summer, Wednesday was the first day that head coaches were permitted to conduct organized practices with their players.

Wednesday also was the only day most county teams were able to conduct two-a-day practices because teachers - including those who double as coaches - are due to report back to the classroom today. The first day of school in Washington County is Aug. 22.

County sports fans won't have to wait long for the first local event. The Washington County Golf Championships will be played today at Black Rock Golf Course at 9 a.m.
