Corrections

August 15, 2007

A story about the future of historic churches in Hagerstown included two errors and what has become a dispute about land donation when it was published on page E1 of the Sunday, Aug. 5, edition of The Herald-Mail.

Due to a reporter's error, a former name for Otterbein United Methodist Church was incorrect in the story. The church's name was St. Paul's United Brethren in Christ prior to 1969.

Due to a source's error, the same story listed the wrong year for the formation of what eventually would become Otterbein's congregation. It formed in 1790.

Also, sources have disputed a historical account in the story. Sources from Zion United Church of Christ insist Jonathan Hager set aside five plots of land for churches, including Otterbein United Methodist Church. Sources from Otterbein United Methodist Church, Hager House and the Washington County Historical Society dispute this account and say Otterbein was not among the churches to receive plots.

Due to a source's error, a story on page C2 of Sunday's edition of The Herald-Mail about a mobile home fire in Funkstown gave an incorrect location of the mobile home. The home was on lot No. 13 in Antietam Village.

The Herald apologizes for the errors.
