Sheriff's Department to hold a citizens police academy next month

The Washington County Sheriff's Department will hold an 11-week citizens police academy beginning Sept. 11.

Classes will be every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There also will be two Saturday sessions of practical instruction such as the Fire Arms Training Simulator (FATS) and training in emergency response techniques for citizens.

Topics will include arrest procedures, use of K-9s, weapons of mass destruction, traffic enforcement, crime scene investigation, communications, disaster preparedness, gang awareness and sex offenses. There also will be a tour of the detention center and a discussion of the judicial division.

Classes will be at the patrol building at 500 Western Maryland Parkway. Graduation will be Nov. 20.
