Area Roundup - Bricker starts well at Pa. Open

LANCASTER, Pa. - Chad Bricker, a two-time WACO champion from Waynesboro, Pa., began the 91st Pennsylvania Open Championship on Monday with a 2-over-par 72.

Bricker's round left him seven shots behind leader Rich Krebs, of Spring Grove, who shot a 65 on the Old Course at Lancaster Country Club, measuring 6,828 yards.

Bricker was in a tie for 19th that includes former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bob Friend.

Christian Breed, also of Waynesboro, shot an 8-over 78 and was in a tie for 87th.

The top 40 players and ties will make the cut after today's second round.

Schouller shoots 71

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fountain Head professional Jim Schouller fired a 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Professionals Championship at the Golden Horseshoe Resort.

Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz could only manage a 4-over 76. Both played on the Green Course in the first round and will play the second round today on the Gold Course.


Wayne DeFrancesco, of Woodmont (Md.) Country Club, is the leader after shooting a 6-under 66.

The top 11 and ties qualify for the PGA Players National Championship.


Thunder tryouts

The Tri-State Thunder, a nonprofit girls fastpitch softball organization, will hold tryouts on the following dates:

16U - Hagerstown Fairgrounds

18U - Hagerstown Community College

Sunday, 4 p.m.

10U, 16U, 18U - Pinesburg

Aug. 22, 6 p.m.

16U - Hagerstown Fairgrounds

Aug. 26, 4 p.m.

10U, 16U, 18U - Pinesburg

The 14U tryouts will be held at later date. There will be no 12U team this year.
