August 13, 2007

SHANGHAI, W.Va. - A mother and son who went to Back Creek to float and fish were found by authorities Sunday, a day after their families last saw them, police said.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said in a press release that Norris Jordan was helped out of the creek about a mile south of Swinging Bridge.

Her son, Daniel Jordan, had made it to the bridge.

Police said the Jordans went to Back Creek, near Shanghai Bridge, with an tube and fishing equipment at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Since the water level was low, they walked along the creek until midnight, when they could no longer see by moonlight, the release says.

They stopped for the night on a sandbar in the middle of the creek, police said. Daniel Jordan told police he used parts of his hat to start a fire, the press release says.

Police said relatives of the Jordans last heard from them at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Relatives alerted police Sunday morning. The Jordans were found a few hours later, police said.
