You Said It

"Help - I'm being held hostage in Maugansville. Can someone please explain why all three roads leading from Maugansville to Hagerstown (Maugans Avenue, Marshall Street, and now Garden View) are being torn up at the same time? Great timing, by the way, on Marshall Street. School starts in two weeks. Between the buses, normal morning traffic and kids walking to school, it should be a lovely mess. Not to mention the North High kids will now have to sit through construction no matter which way (they) go."

"To the person in Hagerstown criticizing a school 'in the South End' about watering the sporting fields: Have you ever played any outdoor sport on dry, dead, dusty grass? As an area high school student athlete, it's very hard to get good footing or run without slipping and falling. Watering the grass lets it (grow) thick and healthy, to help increase play and reduce the risk of injury. But if it bothers you that much, maybe all the schools in the county should just cancel all outdoor sports, because watering the fields seems too much of a waste."

"More than $73,000 for cell phones for Washington County Public Schools - wow. With increasing costs and inflation, that will be about $1 million of taxpayers' money over the next 10 years. How many other school systems in Maryland, and in other states, are spending our hard-earned money for this luxury item? It's just another perk for employees of the school system. Administrators and support personnel: Use the home phone. Here's an idea. For the buses, how about installing CB radios and setting up a base station? That's a one-time expense."

"I was just wondering why every year, from September to January, you see complaints in Mail Call about hunters, and nobody's out doing anything about trying to stop the construction, like across from Food Lion on Eastern Boulevard, where they're destroying all the deer's homes."

"I saw in the paper over the weekend that the House of Representatives voted on a bill to give our soldiers in Iraq mandatory time off at home between deployments. The bill also mandated even more time between deployments for National Guard and reserve units in Iraq. All three of our local representatives - Schuster, Bartlett, and Capito - all voted against the bill. They, like most other representatives that voted against the bill, are Republicans. So the next time someone mentions who supports the troops, let's remember which party actually does, and which party voted overwhelmingly against the troops."

"This possible subsidy, another subsidy for something here in Hagerstown - this time it concerns the airport - this makes what Jefferson said years ago make sense. Thomas Jefferson wrote that we had a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But if you re-evaluate what he said, he apparently was talking about who was going to pick up the tab for all the government waste and expenditures. Just a thought."

"I'm already getting tired of Barry Bonds. So he supposedly broke Hank Aaron's home run record. How many records has Pete Rose broken? And Pete Rose wasn't on steroids or any other drugs. The only thing he did was gamble, and we have laws to take care of that. I don't think it's fair that Mr. Selig treats Pete Rose the way he has been treated. He is American also."

"For those of you out there in Mail Call land that don't understand why the high schools are watering the ball fields, it's very simple. If these ball fields are not green and the football season is starting up, the fields will be ruined, and it will cost thousands upon thousands of dollars to repair. So in order to save that money, you water them preseason, they turn green, they play on green grass, and the fields are not ruined. So there you are. Think a little bit."

"The Herald-Mail is my favorite local newspaper. I don't agree with everything printed therein, but it's interesting and enjoyable to read how others think and feel. Some of my favorites are Charley Reese, 'You Said It,' Kelly's Cuts, Bob Maginnis and letters to the editor. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your paper."

"Any nation that wants to host the Olympics, and then turn right around and poison the food supply of our pets, put antifreeze in toothpaste and melamine in peanut butter, and lead paint on children's toys and flood the market with that stuff, I think the world ought to just haul off and boycott the living daylights out of the Olympics and not have a team sent to China."

"I'm really disappointed - I'm watching the debates with the candidates running for president, and honestly, I wouldn't vote for any of them. Do we have to take what they give us? Isn't there something better in America than these people? It's like it's being shoved down our throats and we're supposed to choose the least of evils. It's ridiculous."
