August 11, 2007|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Berkeley County couple was assaulted, then robbed early Friday in a home invasion-style robbery off U.S. 11, according to a press release from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The incident, at a residence off Rudolph Court north of Martinsburg, was reported at 3:22 a.m.

Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. W.A. Johnson said several suspects with flashlights woke the couple in their bedroom and attacked them before taking cash and property from the home.

The incident was at least the third home invasion-style robbery north of Martinsburg that was reported to police in the last two weeks.

On Aug. 3, two males kicked in the front door of a home off Regiment Lane in the Rocky Glen Mobile Home Park shortly after 7 a.m., according to West Virginia State Police. The suspects in that incident took a laptop computer, iPod and a mobile phone from the home before the victims were able to use pepper spray to get the robbers to leave, police have said.

On July 31, three males, including one armed with a pistol, forced their way into a home at 15 Champion Court in the Spur Cap subdivision about 5:30 a.m. and left with an item after ransacking the home, police said.

Police have said the July 31 incident was believed to be linked to a burglary that also happened that morning in the Falling Waters area.
