'Phantom Tollbooth' takes center stage

Frederick, Md. -Authentic Community Theatre Inc. presents "The Phantom Tollbooth," a theatrical musical production with original script and score based on Norton Juster's 1961 children's classic. Two performances will be held at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick on Saturday, Aug. 11, a matinee at 2 p.m. folllowed by a 7 p.m. show.

The Summer Institute for the Arts is a two-week drama, music and technical program for students ages 8 to 18 from a partnership between Authentic Community Theatre Inc. and the Washington County Board of Education. Community volunteers, professionals and students work to create an original work that culminates in a full-stage musical performance. Participants and staff have been working to devise and write "The Phantom Tollbooth" along with creating sets, props, costumes and learning the technical aspects of theater.

"The Phantom Tollbooth" follows a young boy named Milo on an adventure through a magical tollbooth to a strange land where he learns everything is not a waste of time or boring. Rob Hovermale, coordinator of visual and performing arts for the Washington County Board of Education, composed the music and wrote the lyrics for this original production. Area youth performing in the production include Adam Taylor of Keedysville as Tock the Watchdog, Sean Cross of Hagerstown as the Humbug, Ashley Seibeneichen of Boonsboro as a princess, and Tim Rotz of Hagerstown as the Mathmagician.

Auditions for Dance Fusion Student Performing Company

24/7 Dance Studio in Hagerstown will hold auditions for its Dance Fusion Student Performing Company on Saturday, Aug. 11, at South Pointe Center in Hagerstown. Placement for the company is by audition only. The elementary-school-age audition will be from 1 to 2 p.m., middle-school-age audition from 2 to 3 p.m., and high-school-age audition from 3 to 4 p.m.

Dancers are asked to wear a solid-color leotard, tights, and bring ballet and jazz shoes for the auditions. They will do a ballet and jazz combination, and will be tested for flexibility and leaps.

Dance Fusion rehearsals are held at South Pointe Center.
