Lions Club hosts community at annual fair

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Mercersburg Lions Club will be hosting its 32nd annual community fair from Sunday, Aug. 12, to Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Lions Club Park at 405 S. Park Ave. The fair consists of food, games, prizes, crafts, antiques, musical performances and a yard sale spread over an acre.

On Sunday, the fair kicks off with "An Evening in the Park." A vespers service led by the Rev. Alan Wilson of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and St. Stevens Lutheran Church begins at 7 p.m. Then the Mercersburg community band plays at 8 p.m. and will soundtrack the firework display at 9 p.m.

The food stand provided by the Mercersburg Lions Club will open each evening at 5:30 and serve until 11 p.m. The menu includes sandwiches - Italian, pork burger with sauerkraut, hot dogs, ground ox, pork tenderloin, hoagie and country ham - and homemade soups, french fries, ice cream and make-your-own sundae.

Thursday features the all-day chicken barbecue beginning at 10:30 a.m. The dinner platter costs $6; half a chicken costs $5. A $25 ticket for bingo includes a chicken barbecue dinner and 28 games of bingo. Prize money totals $3,500. This special ticket is available early by calling James Zeger at 717-328-3701.

Saturday's festivities begin at 7 a.m. with breakfast, antiques and craft displays and a yard sale. The fee for a space is $10; vendors should bring their own table. Call Zeger at 717-328-3701.

One of the biggest events of the fair is the 600 club raffle Saturday night, Zeger said. Tickets cost $10, and only 600 tickets are available; 136 prizes are awarded.

During the week, Snyder's Amusements will provide 16 to 18 rides in all, Zeger said, including a merry-go-round, a big slide, paratroopers and a Ferris wheel. An all-evening pass allowing rides from 7 to 10:30 p.m. costs $15.

Every evening, local musicians will perform. Saturday features Paul Funk and his band, New Country, who have performed in the Saturday night slot for the past 32 years.
