PTA raises money for playground equipment

August 09, 2007

HANCOCK - The Hancock Elementary School PTA's goal to raise $50,000 to replace 30-year-old playground equipment has been reached.

The new equipment will be installed and ready for use by early September, according to Kristen Robison, who spearheaded the project.

The playground equipment has been ordered and is expected to arrive by the middle of this month, Robison said. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled when all is in place, she said.

The project began in the summer of 2006. A student-inspired playground design was chosen, based on student survey forms and drawings of the ultimate playground.

In addition to fundraisers, a corporate sponsorship program that invited businesses to sponsor the playground at different levels, was established. In return, the businesses names will be listed on the entrance sign at the playground.

Several local businesses chose to buy an actual piece of playground equipment. A placard will be placed on each piece of equipment recognizing the contribution, Robison said.

Playground items such as balls, jump ropes and other supplies are needed, Robison said.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be sent to Hancock Elementary School Playground Project, 290 W. Main St., Hancock, MD 21750.

Anyone who would like more information on the project may contact the school at 301-766-8178.
