Leatherman sticks to her guns, bound for Ole Miss

August 03, 2007|By LARRY YANOS

Stacie Leatherman, a recent graduate of Boonsboro High School, has earned a scholarship to compete on the women's rifle team at the University of Mississippi.

"I actually decided on Ole Miss last fall," Leatherman said. "I visited the school last year and decided that is where I would like to further my education. I went to orientation in May and I'm looking forward to my freshman year. The academics are great down there."

Leatherman said she also was approached by the University of Tennessee at Martin, Alaska, Nebraska and West Virginia, but only after she signed the letter of intent with the Division I Southeastern Conference school in Oxford.

Leatherman will compete in air rifle and smallbore events for Ole Miss coach Valerie Boothe, who was contacted by Leatherman's Antietam Junior Rifle Club coach of 12 years, Norris Diefenderfer.

In 2007 - for the fifth consecutive year - Leatherman earned an invitation to the National Junior Olympics Women's Air Rifle and Smallbore Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she competed in the Intermediate Junior Division. It was there that Boothe first saw Leatherman in action.

"Going to the nationals was a great learning experience," Leatherman said. "I learned so much."
