Local students earn awards at leadership conference

Five Washington County Technical High School students and eight Frederick County (Md.) Career & Technology Center students brought home awards in June from the 43rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo., according to a Maryland Department of Education press release.

The local students were part of a team of Maryland students from career and technology education programs throughout the state focusing on 72 trade, technical, health occupations and leadership competitions, according to the release.

Maryland students competed in events related to computer programming, customer service, electronics technology, industrial motor control, commercial banking, computer maintenance technology, television production, nursing assistance, occupational health and safety, prepared speech and sheet metal, according to the release.

Winning honors from Washington County Career and Technical High School were:

· Eighth Place in Entrepreneurship - the team of Christine McMaster, Erin O'Brian, Katelyn Webb and Christina Zucconi

· Eighth Place in Medical Math - Laura Schanno


Winning honors from Frederick County Career & Technology Center were:

· Gold medal in Customer Service - Warren Zentz

· Silver medal in Television (video) Production (post-secondary) - Philip Cunningham and Michael Nannetti

· Fifth Place in Extemporaneous Speaking - Danielle Maught

· Fifth Place in Job Skill Demonstration B - Deborah Ward

· Seventh Place in Industrial Motor Control (post-secondary) - Jason Green

· Ninth Place in Automotive Service Technology - Scott Fowler

· Tenth Place in Food & Beverage Service - Ashley Gilbert

SkillsUSA Maryland has a statewide membership of 4,800 students. The Maryland team included students from 20 counties and the city of Baltimore, according to the release.
