You Said It

"I'm calling regarding the cartoon by Daryl Cagel, MSNBC.com, on the Opinion Page of the Thursday, July 19, issue of The Daily Mail. It shows a very built-up Barry Bonds batting, and I guess reflecting his supposed steroid use. I don't agree with hardly any of the cartoons in that spot, and I am not a fan of Barry Bonds. However, I do believe if a cartoonist is going to show a specific person, that person should be reflected in an accurate manner. Bonds hits left-handed, and he is not a switch hitter. Uh oh - so much for accuracy in cartooning."

"The Herald-Mail would perform a great public service if it would print in its entirety President George W. Bush's July 17, 2007, executive order titled 'Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stability Efforts in Iraq.' This executive order can be found on the White House's Web site."

"Last week, someone let us know that he or she was never going to vote for Hillary Clinton. I think I would, and here's why: Throughout the millennia, women have sacrificed their fathers, their husbands, their brothers and their sons for the glory of one megalomaniac or another. I believe a woman president would never think up a reason to go to war in some faraway country. I would not mind seeing this country at peace for eight years. Wouldn't that be nice? I hope I never have to see another or hear about another victory parade. All they mean is we killed more of your guys than they killed of us."

"Nearly every day we read about the latest scandal in professional sports. Most recently we read the story of Michael Vick and Tim Donaghy. Folks, these are not isolated events. They are everyday occurrences in professional sports. At one time I loved sports, but now it is full of corruption."

"Let me see if I got this right: Martha Stewart goes to prison because she lied to the grand jury, but Scooter Libby doesn't. What, because he's a man? I think all the women out there in the world should be really mad about this."

"Why would the City of Hagerstown come out and say they could save about $1.7 million after bids came in to widen Eastern Boulevard? Guess what it's now going to cost, after unforeseen delays and unforeseen problems? Probably at least the $1.7 million you thought you were going to save. I also see where the delays are still adding costs to the courthouse renovations. Several of these are the fault of the contractors, so why aren't the contractors being held responsible, instead of costing the taxpayers more?"

"Bush said 'More and more our imports are coming from overseas.' Only Bush could think of that."

"I was just wondering: I see a lot of Washington County school buses, ever since school has been out, early in the morning. I take it that they're taking kids to summer school, but these buses only have a couple kids each time I see them, and I was wondering - it looks like that appears to be a waste of taxpayers' money."

"The gentleman that lives in the old mill was doing some wonderful work to the creek, fixing the dam, making a better place for people to fish and sit and look out. He had someone complain that he was out there with construction equipment, fixing the creek. I just think that that is totally wrong. You have someone that is willing to take time and fix the creek and make it a better place for everyone in Williamsport, and every little bit he does for that creek helps from our flooding being even worse. I just really think it's wrong that someone ruined that for a lot of people. I think people should think first before they complain."

"Sign of the times: There are 18 substitute trustee sales of improved property in Washington County."

"The Maryland deputy secretary of agriculture, who is also a fifth-generation farmer in Calvert County, said he hasn't seen a drought like this in almost a quarter of a century, and yet our local officials here in Washington County haven't even mentioned conserving water, let alone putting a moratorium on water use."

"This is one Vietnam veteran talking. To the parents of the soldiers: I won't treat your sons or daughters any worse or any better than the way you or your parents treated me 30-some years ago. Fair enough?"

"News says 65 percent of our food is imported. Our manufacturing is imported. We used to do all this. We sent food around the world. I wish we would stop all shipments of food, except tropical fruits we cannot raise here. The only people getting rich are the CEOs of food companies."
