W.Va. man killed in Jefferson Co. crash

July 30, 2007|By DAVE McMILLION

RANSON, W.Va. - A Ranson man died early Sunday after the pickup truck he was driving on Cranes Lane went off the road and struck a tree, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Jeffery Shillingburg, age unavailable, was unconscious when Cpl. Vincent Tiong found him inside the truck.

Shillingburg died at about 1 a.m., Tiong said.

Shillingburg, who lived at 107 Plum Tree Lane in the Orchard Hills subdivision, was traveling west on Cranes Lane in a Ford F-150 truck when he lost control and went off the left side of the road near the intersection with Lemon Road, Tiong said.

Cranes Lane extends off North Mildred Street in Ranson.

Police believe Shillingburg overcorrected the truck, locked the brakes and struck the tree on the driver's side, said Tiong, who was called to the scene at 12:18 a.m.

Shillingburg, who was the only person in the car, was trapped in the truck, and Tiong said he had to break the passenger-side window and open the passenger door to reach Shillingburg.

An apparent witness to the crash said it appears that Shillingburg came over a hill too fast and lost control, Tiong said.
