Hilltop Christian Fellowship welcomes new pastor

July 28, 2007

Pastor Dennis Whitmore is the new - and the first - senior pastor of Hilltop Christian Fellowship Church in Big Pool.

No newcomer to the ministry, Whitmore began in 1995 in Big Pool, where he served the three-church Potomac Charge for seven years.

Since 2002, he has been senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Laurel, Md.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Whitmore graduated from Towson University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. After an eight-year career as a salesman, manager and personal trainer in Baltimore health clubs, he changed his career path and entered Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Whitmore was vice president of the Laurel Clergy Association where he helped organize opposition to slot machines. This led to "Side by Side," which encouraged Laurel church to adopt their local Prince George's County public school as an alternative to funding through gambling.

Whitmore and his wife, Marcella, have two daughters, Elizabeth and Joanna.

Hilltop is a 31/2-year-old nondenominational church at 9508 National Pike.
